We offer two different parental conflict courses

"My mum and dad argue a lot"

"Recession and Family Well Being"

"My mum and dad argue a lot" is the title of our one-day course which looks at the effect of parental conflict on children, whether their parents are living together or not. It has been called the 'missing link 'in parenting programmes and has been designed as a series of modules which may be added on to existing programmes or delivered on their own.

Research shows that some types of conflict between parents (whether they live together or not), can have profoundly negative effects on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing and educational outcomes. But when conflict is managed well, children can benefit and learn from the experience.

Aim of "My mum and dad argue a lot"
The overall aim is to support the parenting education and support sector to respond to the needs of parents and families living with conflict and to reduce the impact of conflict on children. "The quality of children's lives is heavily influenced by their parents' relationship – children recognise this more than their parents... 7 out of 10 teenagers say that their parents getting on well is 'one of the most important factors in raising happy children' – yet only a third of parents thought so" (U.K.. NFPI survey of 2343 pupils 11-16 years old from 115 schools in 2000).

Recession and Family Well Being

The effects of the recession on relationships
The impact of the recession has been particularly difficult for families in Ireland with more people experiencing redundancy and reduced income. The associated stress and emotional problems increases the likelihood of relationship conflict and means that parenting can be more difficult.

Families are affected by:

Financial hardship - Low earnings, high debts, redundancy and repossession can combine to produce increased pressure on a family’s income.

Unemployment - Families are not only affected by loss of income but also the psychological impact of unemployment.

Poorer Housing - During the recession families struggle to afford mortgage or rent payments often resulting in repossession.

Separation and divorce: When a relationship does break down the couple may have to stay together in the same home as separation and divorce become less affordable in the recession.

Aim of the workshop
To raise awareness and understanding to help practitioners support parents to deal with conflict and reduce its potentially harmful impact on children. It is also designed for parents themselves, to help them understand more about conflict and how it is managed. The workshop looks at conflict through the lens of the current economic climate and the specific challenges that recession can bring to a family.
